Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count page views and see, in general terms, where visitors come from and which devices they use. It doesn’t use analytics for advertising, and it doesn’t share analytics data with anyone else.
Google Analytics only sets cookies if you choose Accept analytics in the cookie banner. Until then, it runs in Google’s Consent Mode with analytics storage turned off: it sets no cookies and sends Google only basic, cookieless signals that a page was visited.
Searches
If you accept analytics, each search you make on the map is recorded so I can see what people look for and what the map is missing. A record holds:
- the search term, and which entry it matched, if any
- the date and time of the search
- your browser’s user agent string, which names your browser, its version and your operating system
- the referrer: the address of the page that linked you to this site, if your browser sends it
Records don’t include your IP address, name or any cookie identifier, and are not linked to your Google Analytics data. They are kept in a private Google Sheet that only I can see, are not shared with anyone else, and are not used for advertising.
If you reject analytics, or haven’t chosen yet, searches are not recorded.
Cookies
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
cc_cookie | This site | Remembers your cookie choice | 6 months |
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics, only if you accept | Distinguishes visitors and sessions for analytics | Up to 2 years |
You can change your choice at any time with the link at the bottom of every page. If you withdraw consent, the analytics cookies are removed.
People in the map
The map names some leaders of the organisations it covers, with their public roles. Every entry is compiled from public sources, which are linked from the entry itself. If you are listed and something is wrong or you would rather not be included, please get in touch and it will be corrected or removed.
Hosting, fonts and maps
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, which logs visitor IP addresses for security purposes. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, and the graph and map libraries (D3 and Leaflet) from cdnjs, so those services see your IP address when the page loads. The map view loads tiles from OpenStreetMap. If you accept analytics, search records are sent to Google Apps Script, which saves them to the Google Sheet. None of these set cookies.
